This is Estelle. I am a new PhD student, doing accounting and taxation. I finished my Bachelor degree of Commerce (with Honours) in 2012. I think it is fun doing research, and that’s why I started a PhD.
When I was in the morning tea on Friday morning, Julia came to me and we had a chat. She said that doing a PhD was a big commitment. I nodded as if I were totally aware of the upcoming things, particularly difficulties.
In fact, I only had a taste of doing research in the Honours program. It was confusing and disappointing at the beginning. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out my research question and research model which had been done far more ahead by my peers. I cried several times when I felt so lost and helpless. Luckily, my supervisor always pushed me and encouraged me to think more and do more.
Things went better in the second semester after I indeed started doing my research (the first semester was more like an exploring and preparing phase). I was engaged in endless data-collection, model revision, and of courses, writing. I attended some writing workshops, hoping that I could develop good argument. But it still took me a long time to structure a good argument. I am not the person who can build a nice structure in their mind and then start to write smoothly. I need to write, delete, write, and revise, and maybe a few days later, write all over again. The iterative process was a bit painful yet enjoyable, and it brought about the sense of achievement at the end.
I am glad to meet a bunch of energetic (and talented) friends in BUSN 8018. I am sure you guys are going to motivate me all the way. Let’s have a happy and meaningful journey.
